Independence Day is Right
Around the Corner

Staying safe on July 4th involves a variety of considerations, from fireworks safety to grilling and outdoor activities. The following covers some key tips we’d like to share on how to ensure a safe and enjoyable Independence Day Holiday:

Fireworks Safety

  1. Follow Local Laws: Only use fireworks that are legal in your area.
  2. Supervise Children: Never let children handle fireworks. Adults should always supervise fireworks activities.
  3. Use Outdoors: Light fireworks in an open, clear area away from buildings, vehicles, and flammable materials.
  4. Have Water Ready: Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby in case of fire or mishaps.
  5. Proper Disposal: Douse spent fireworks with water before disposing of them to prevent trash fires.

Water Safety

    1. Supervise Children: Always watch children closely when they are in or near water.
    2. Use Life Jackets: Ensure everyone wears a life jacket when boating or participating in water sports.
    3. Swim in Safe Areas: Only swim in designated areas with lifeguards present.
    4. Avoid Alcohol: Do not consume alcohol when swimming, boating, or supervising children in the water.

Grilling Safety

  1. Check Equipment: Inspect the grill for leaks, cracks, or wear before use.
  2. Keep Grill Stable: Set up the grill on a flat, stable surface away from structures and foliage.
  3. Monitor the Grill: Never leave a grill unattended while in use.
  4. Proper Lighting Techniques: Use long-handled lighters or matches to light the grill to avoid burns.
  5. Wear Protective Gear: Use long-handled tools and wear an apron and oven mitts to protect against heat and flames.

Sun & Heat Safety

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration.
  2. Use Sunscreen: Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating.
  3. Seek Shade: Take breaks in the shade to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and the effects of sunburn.
  4. Wear Protective Clothing: Wear hats, sunglasses, & light, loose-fitting clothing for sun & heat protection.

On General Safety

First Aid Kit: Have a first aid kit available for minor injuries and know basic first aid procedures.

Be Aware of Surroundings: Stay aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places or public events.

Plan for Emergencies: Have a plan in place for emergencies and knowing the proper location of the nearest medical facilities.
