Managing Through Our Heat

Beating the heat in Las Vegas and our surrounding communities during the hot summer months requires careful planning and taking various measures to stay cool and hydrated. Especially so, considering the record temperatures. Here are some helpful tips to help and remind you to stay comfortable:

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration. Carry a reusable water bottle with you and avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol, as they can contribute to dehydration.

Dress Light: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing to help reflect sunlight and keep your body cooler. Consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses for added protection.

Use Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from the intense sun. Reapply every few hours, especially if you’re swimming or sweating.

Seek Shade: Whenever possible, stay in the shade to avoid direct sun exposure. This can significantly lower your body temperature.

Plan Outdoor Activities: If you need to be outdoors, try to schedule activities during the cooler parts of the day, like early mornings or evenings. Avoid strenuous activities during the peak heat hours.

Use Cooling Accessories: Use items like cooling towels, neck wraps, or portable fans to help lower your body temperature. These can be especially helpful when you’re out and about.

Stay Indoors: If the heat becomes unbearable, stay indoors in air-conditioned places such as malls, libraries, or community centers. This is especially important during the hottest parts of the day.

Use Fans and Air Conditioning: If you’re at home, use fans and air conditioning to keep indoor temperatures comfortable. Make sure your air conditioning system is well-maintained to ensure it’s functioning properly.

Close Curtains and Blinds: Keep curtains and blinds closed during the day to block out the sun’s heat. This can help maintain cooler indoor temperatures.

Take Cool Showers or Baths: A cool shower or bath can help lower your body temperature and provide temporary relief from the heat.

Avoid Hot Cars: Never leave children, pets, or even yourself in a parked car, as temperatures can quickly become dangerously high.

Stay Informed: Keep an eye on weather forecasts and heat advisories. Stay informed about the temperature and adjust your plans accordingly.

Use a Mist Spray: Carry a small mist spray bottle filled with water to spritz yourself when you’re feeling hot.

Stay Informed about Heat-Related Illnesses: Be aware of the signs of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke. If you or someone else is experiencing symptoms like heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, dizziness, confusion, or a high body temperature, seek medical attention.
